On December 12, 1531 an image of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, miraculous appeared on the ‘tilma’ (or cloak) of Juan Diego in Mexico. The natural fiber cloth of which it is made normally lasts no more than 50 years; however, almost 500 years later the tilma remains intact and still exists today for all to see in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe near Mexico City. Our Lady is depicted on the cloth as the pregnant Mother of God. Via the message conveyed during her four appearances in that long ago December and in the miraculously image provided, she came to offer faith, hope and consolation to the oppressed Indians. She played an important part in ending the human sacrifices carried out by the Aztecs and was instrumental in converting nine million Indians over the nine year following her appearance to Juan Diego. And yet, this was only the beginning of what she desired to accomplish.
The Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is an exact 4' x 6' print of the digitally-scanned original miraculous image. The visiting Missionary Image, created in 2001, was blessed by Monsignor Diego Monroy Ponce (Rector of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe from 2000 to 2010) with the intention of aiding the mission of promoting the sanctity of family, solidarity of the Church, a culture of life, and a civilization of love. It has journeyed throughout America on parish visitations.
Pope John Paul II recognized the evangelistic role of Our Lady of Guadalupe when he prayed that the Guadalupe Shrine would be a center “from which the light of the gospel of Christ will shine out over the whole world by means of the Miraculous Image of His Mother.” He also prayed that:
“Our Lady accompanies each one of her daughters and sons with her repeating what she said to her children in Cana, ‘Do whatever He tells you.’ (Jn. 2:5). May she cross this continent bringing it ‘life, sweetness and hope!’ May she enliven and protect the work of the New Evangelization, so that Christians may live their faith with consistency and fervor, and that those who have abandoned it may return. May she promote the unity of the Church, reuniting as in a new Pentecost those who believe in Jesus Christ and those who need to be renewed by the Spirit.”
The Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe will visit the Churches of Mary, Queen of Saints Parish from Friday, December 2nd through Monday, December 12th, 2022.
